The Science in the City team is preparing the 2026 National Science and Arts Festival, taking place on the 25th and 26th of September in Valletta under the theme ‘Research, Resist, Reimagine’. But the festival is only the visible peak: there’s a whole year-round programme that links science with society, making research more accessible!
Throughout the year our interns and collaborators work tirelessly to inspire young minds through the path of science, showing the public that knowledge is actionable and accessible, even outside the Science in the City festival. The team’s participation in Festa STEM at Santa Monica School and the engagement with young people during the Right 2 Smile Youth Group Open Day are just two examples. This is how we make complex topics understandable and relatable, how we break stereotypes and encourage participation from underrepresented communities, while fostering equality. We visit locations all over the island and beyond, travelling to Gozo on more than one occasion; to the Science in the Citadel on the 26th April, and again to the Primary Science Fair and STEM Challenge, organised by the directorate for STEM and VET, between the 4th and 8th of May.
Our well established pre-festival events take place between the end of August to end September. These events include innovative workshops and interactive sessions with researchers and artists. This platform allows the community to see how by connecting their work to real-world issues, these professionals demonstrate how knowledge and creativity can positively impact society. We hope they can motivate the next generation to pursue their passions and contribute to a more innovative, thoughtful, and inclusive world. In December we also host an online programme for our Virtual Festival, that allows people who haven’t visited the real-world activities, to enjoy a few of the performances from the comfort of their own home.
Our vision couldn’t be realised without the help of NGOs, government entities, businesses, educational institutions, researchers and creatives who collaborate with our team.
These year-round activities that take science communication activities directly into schools and the community, ensure that scientists, artists and educators make knowledge accessible, spark curiosity, and inspire participation in STEAM.
These interactions aim to build trust, encourage lifelong learning, and empower communities to engage with real-world challenges, creating a more informed, inclusive, and innovative society.
