Be part of Science in the City as a volunteer!
Science in the City recruits volunteers almost all year round. No previous experience is required, just passion & excitement for science communication and the arts.
Please note that all volunteers must be residing in Malta and be 16+ years of age.
Volunteers with Science in the City 2026!
This year, Science in the City presents two festivals and a number of pre-festival events. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help bring the events to life! Whether you would like to join us for one event, two events, or the full programme, we would love to welcome you as part of our team.
Our 2026 events include:
- Pre-festival: Tuesday 1st to Friday 24th September 2026, at the APS Hub in St Julian’s and other venues in Valletta
- Street Festival: Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September 2026, 6PM – 11PM, around the iconic Triton Fountain, Valletta.
- Performance & Workshop Festival: Friday 6th between 10am and 10pm and Saturday 7th November 2026 between 10:45am and 10pm, at MICAS in Floriana, St John’s Co Cathedral and Off Beat bar.

Volunteer training workshops will take place at the beginning of September, just before the activities kick off.
Role 1: Festival Ambassador
Be a friendly face to visitors and ensure every guest has a phenomenal experience from start to finish.
If you enjoy being right at the heart of the action, then this could be the role for you! This dynamic role will give you a flavour of the whole festival. We are seeking friendly, kind, and enthusiastic volunteers who will be able to answer any questions that visitors may have. You will provide directions, recommend your favourite performances, and jump in where you are needed most!
Responsibilities:
- Be a friendly face for visitors!
- Answer any queries visitors may have
- Help out where needed most!
Role 2: Science Supporter
Join forces with scientists and help bring their stands to life!
Work alongside researchers, NGOs, and artists, to immerse the public at the festival and make science accessible for all! If you have a passion for science communication, and you enjoy hands-on experiments, then this could be the role for you.
Responsibilities:
- Support with interactive STEAM experiments at stands
- Set up around Triton fountain
- Engage visitors in an accessible manner
Role 3: Feedback Friend
Gather feedback that will shape the future of Science in the City.
Year on year, we strive to improve the festival for everyone, and we need your help with this! A festival this big can only succeed if we listen to our visitors’ ideas on areas that we can improve. As a Feedback Friend, monitor engagement, gather data, and help us understand how to make the festival even better!
Responsibilities:
- Use strong communication skills to engage with the public
- Conduct experience surveys using flyers, tablets, and QR codes
- Approach festival goers to ask about their festival experience
Role 4: Visual Storyteller
Capture the excitement of the festival and tell our story through your own lens!
We are looking for aspiring, novice, or professional photographers/videographers, who are interested in capturing the essence and excitement of the Science in the City Festival. If you’ve got an eye for detail, and a passion for visual storytelling, then this is your time to shine!
Responsibilities:
- Capture and edit photos/videos of festival-goers, researchers, artists, and core team members.
- Share your ideas for our social media platforms
Note: Volunteers in this role must have their own camera (phone cameras are ok, but DSLRs are preferred).
Role 5: Crew
Help Us Build the Festival from the Ground up!
Before the crowds arrive, there is a lot happening behind the scenes. Turn our venues from empty shells into magical hubs of learning, creativity, and fun. We’re looking for hands-on and energetic volunteers to set up the festival before the crowds arrive, and dismantle the stands after they leave. If you want to be the engine of the festival, then this could be the role for you!
Responsibilities:
- Bring the festival design to life by setting up stands
- Put up signage to ensure the day runs smoothly
- Place barriers and help keep festival goers safe
No special skills needed — just a bit of strength, a good attitude, and a willingness to pitch in.

Our festival doesn’t just happen in September, we continue to host hands-on workshops and exciting events all year round, and we’re always on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers to jump in and help bring our mission to life.
Whether you’ve got a good eye for photography or just love being where the action is, there’s a role for you:
- Photographers – capture the magic and moments of discovery
- Helpers – from guiding kids through activities to keeping things running smoothly
We announce volunteer opportunities through email and Google Forms — keep an eye out here and on our social media channels.
You’ll get the chance to be part of exciting initiatives like Science in the City Goes to School and the Science in the City Post-Festival. Plus, all volunteers receive a certificate recognising their contribution.
