The Seismology in Schools (SiS) project introduces a school-based seismic monitoring network that brings earthquake science into the classroom through hands-on engagement with real-time data. By installing user-friendly seismometers in educational settings and linking them to a wider national seismic network, the initiative enables students to actively participate in the observation, collection, interpretation of seismic signals, understanding of how earthquakes are detected, how seismic waves are analysed, and what this means for understanding geohazards locally and globally.

SiS places research at the centre of learning, not as an abstract concept but as a lived process where data is generated, analysed, and used to build knowledge about the natural world. It also promotes resistance in the sense of resilience, strengthening awareness of seismic risk and encouraging preparedness in the face of natural hazards. By engaging directly with scientific tools and methods, participants develop a deeper appreciation of how evidence informs safety and decision making.

This project invites us to reimagine the relationship between science and education. Schools become active contributors to national monitoring systems, blurring the line between learning and real scientific practice. This creates a model where communities are not only informed by science but are also part of its production, fostering empowerment, curiosity, and long term scientific literacy.
