EcoSpectrum is an innovative environmental education and ecosystem restoration initiative that combines science, creativity, and community action to rehabilitate Malta’s threatened freshwater habitats while promoting social inclusion. Focusing on the restoration of the Chadwick Lakes ecosystem, the project empowers neurodivergent young people to become active environmental stewards through hands-on conservation, citizen science, and creative engagement. Participants contribute directly to biodiversity restoration by removing invasive species, collecting native seeds, planting indigenous trees, and monitoring ecological recovery, while developing practical STEAM skills and environmental awareness.

The project is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of ecologists, science communicators, educators, learning support assistants, environmental specialists, and creative practitioners, ensuring that both the ecological restoration and educational experiences are scientifically rigorous, inclusive, and accessible to all participants.

By integrating ecological restoration with inclusive, project-based learning, EcoSpectrum demonstrates how environmental action can simultaneously address biodiversity loss, climate resilience, education, and social equity. The project creates lasting environmental benefits through habitat restoration and strengthens community ownership of Malta’s natural heritage by inspiring future generations to protect and value their local environment.

A comprehensive evaluation and impact assessment will measure the project’s environmental, educational, and social outcomes. The findings will inform the development of an evidence-based educational toolkit for schools, parents, and educators, providing practical resources and best practices for delivering inclusive outdoor STEAM learning and supporting neurodivergent learners through nature-based education. By making these resources openly available, EcoSpectrum’s impact will extend well beyond the project itself, enabling wider adoption and replication across Malta.
