Help superheroes fight crime using your smartphones!

‘Crime Hunter’ will provide you with a unique experience to take part in a fun and interactive treasure hunt where you will be able to assist superheros in fighting crime, using your smartphone! Research carried out at the Department of Cognitive Science has led to the creation of the “I’m Afraid” app. This app allows the user to record their level of fear to a particular crime, to select reasons why they are afraid and also to take a photo of what is causing that fear.

Traditionally, approaches to understanding fear of crime have focused on recollection of the instance.  However, this can present an inaccurate picture of the actual level of fear of crime in everyday life. Giving citizens the opportunity to record their fear in real time on their phones, gives a more accurate understanding of this phenomenon. This, in turn can help to develop strategies against it. To participate, you will need to download the app on your smartphones, and then take photos of a variety of staged crimes (e.g. vandalism, theft) across Valletta. At the main stand you will also be able to collect a treasure hunt checklist and other promotional material to further assist you in your crime fighting. Superheroes will be scouting the area to meet and assist you in finding these crimes, should you require their help. The participant who submits the best photo that evening will win a day in the lab of this department. Volunteers will happily answer any of your questions at the main stand and explain the research behind the science project that led to the creation of the app.
