This area is all about YOU – literally. How the Health? is all about the body, it’s successes and failures, and the long strides our researchers have made to keep us alive and well. UM student organisations, MBSA, MPSA, MHSA and MMSA offer a journey through the world of medical science, from vaccines to blood pressure, with free health checks to make it extra personal.
This year, MABS, The Department of Pathology and Malta college of Pathologists will be teaming up to demonstrate the many ways that science can help us identify when things go wrong. Come along to one of the following demonstrations to have a go at being a scientist for the night:
6:00 – 6:30pm – Demonstration: Cheek Cells under the Microscope
7:00 -7:30pm – Demonstration: Blood Grouping and Blood Compatibility
8:00 -8:30pm – Demonstration: Blood Cells and Blood Film Staining
9:00 – 9:30pm – Demonstration: Glucose Analysis in our Labs
10:00 – 10:30pm – Demonstration: Staining Bacteria and Antibiotic Testing
Got a sweet tooth? Come chat to the Malta Association of Dental students to see a first-hand demonstration of the effect of sugar on teeth and get some free advice.
The Association of Anaesthetists will be here to help you learn how to save a life by pushing air through artificial lungs.Come to the stand to see how Anaesthetists keep you alive and pain free during an operation and take care of you if you are in Intensive Care Unit. You can learn about pain relief during delivery of a baby and see how children are given anaesthetic. This is your opportunity to get the myths busted!
Visit the electromagnetic research group to find out how microwaves are used in the medical industry for breast cancer diagnosis and to cure cancer in the liver, lung and kidney. The team will be happy to explain more!
You can also take advantage of the opportunity to chat with the members of DRs 4 choice, a voluntary group of medical professionals here to offer expertise on contraception, sex education and access to termination of pregnancy.
DWARNA, the new portal to the UM Biobank, will be hosting an interactive puppet show, with performances every 45 minutes from 6:30 pm. The show will run for 15 minutes. Meeting the Goblin Hemo… HemoGoblin is a must, he and his friends will introduce the world of biomedical research and biobanking in the most exciting of ways.
Come along to learn about health through a whole new medium that’s also great for kids.
The department of Pharmacy will be here to show how science and creativity can transform chemicals to medicines which are appropriate for each and every one of YOU! They will be bringing activities which uncover how medicines are developed to treat health conditions including cancer and rare diseases. Learn about how drug therapy can be personalised to the individual, decreasing the decrease risk of side-effects and improving the safety of medications.
On top of all the above, researchers from the BioBank, RDM and ALS research will be there to talk to you about their work.
