At Science in the City, J.E.D.I. (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) reflects our belief that science is for everyone.
Introduced as the central theme of the 2024 festival, J.E.D.I. challenged us to rethink how research and innovation can become truly accessible, representative, and meaningful for all communities.
The festival explored how science creates the greatest impact when it embraces diverse perspectives, removes barriers to participation, and actively welcomes people from all backgrounds, identities, abilities, and experiences.
Through interactive events, virtual shipwreck exploration, 3D gut-microbe modelling, performances, games, art installations, discussions, and workshops, Science in the City highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces where curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking can thrive.
By encouraging wider participation in STEAM careers and research, and amplifying voices that have historically been underrepresented, the festival reaffirmed its commitment to building a more equitable, innovative, and socially engaged future through science and the arts.

Festival Highlights
Here are some photos representing the 2024 edition of Science in the City. For example, interactive workshops and activities such as Hands on Science (UM Faculty of Engineering, UM department of Mathematics, S-Cubed) and Science of Friendship (BETAPSI) engaged with audiences making science closer to the public, while the performances, such as Am I Normal (Braintastic!Science) or Ripped Genes (Ringroad Theatre) explored how scientific questions connect with everyday life, encouraging discussion, curiosity, and reflection.
