2021 - Sowing Seeds
The 2021 edition of Science in the City was inspired by the theme Sowing Seeds, a metaphor for the seeds of knowledge that help individuals develop the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.
At a time when society faces major challenges such as climate change, global health crises, and the sustainable management of finite resources, the festival explored how knowledge, research, and creativity can empower people to make informed decisions and contribute to positive change. The theme highlighted the importance of nurturing critical and creative thinking, encouraging both citizens and stakeholders to take shared responsibility for the future.
Through a diverse programme of performances, workshops, talks, games, exhibitions, and interactive experiences, Sowing Seeds connected science, arts, and society while fostering dialogue between researchers and the public. The festival aimed to inspire curiosity, active citizenship, and a greater understanding of how small actions and new ideas can grow into meaningful solutions for local and global challenges.

Festival Highlights
The 2021 edition of the Science in the City festival was held in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online activities. The archive photographs capture a variety of interactive experiences, performances, and exhibitions presented across Valletta. Featured themes include archaeology and Malta’s prehistoric heritage, forensic science, biodiversity and invasive species, climate change, marine conservation, genetics, and science communication.
