Magna Żmien is a Valletta 2018 project set up by a group of like-minded individuals with the aim of preserving and providing access to historic content from the past century that has been captured on analogue sound and image equipment by Maltese at home and abroad. These documents capture changing landscapes, socialscapes, relationships and communities which might otherwise be forgotten. Central to the project is the reinterpretation and creative reuse of this digital content for artistic purposes. “The Magnificent Memory Machine” is both a physical device and a movement to collect, convert and make available fading memories in order to provide a fertile collective context for present and future cyberspace navigators and storytellers.
During Science in the City, Magna Żmien will showcase the Machine with a series of performances throughout the night featuring actors and musicians. This performance will be taking place at Castille Square, at 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm . In between these performances, team members will be on hand to explain some of the analogue audiovisual technology that has been used to capture and play back memories – from zoetropes, slides and projectors, to tape reels, vinyl and virtual reality. Furthermore, in Spazju Kreattiv, between 7pm and 8.10pm, Magna Żmien will present a talk about our research for Malta Cafe Scientifique.
